The screenshot above shows how I've customized the bottom part of my desktop ("The Taskbar"):
Search added to Quick-Launch area - Once start is clicked 'Search' shows as in the graphic above, you can right-click Search and drag it down to your taskbar's Quick Launch area. Then, you can open Search with 1-click on the Search icon.
I also unlocked the taskbar, and re-sized it so it's double the normal height. This gives more room for holding all the windows I open.
ANOTHER WAY to quickly bring up Search Companion:
